Excerpt

She tore her gaze away from the mare and said firmly. “Cinco pesos. And only because this yegua has fire, not because of your terms. Selena, pay him.”

Selena’s hand shook, but the pesos were transferred to the dirty palm. The man laughed with glee, the crowd dispersed, and Catalina was left with a dirty, starving horse.

“We shall get you fed and cleaned up.” She patted the mare’s neck. A cloud of dirt rose in the air, and Catalina struggled not to cough. “I shall call you La Reina, because once in my establo, I shall treat you like a queen. Your body may be beaten, but your spirit is not broken.”

“Catalina?” Her maid’s voice was tentative as it interrupted her quiet chattering. “Whatever possessed you—”

“Fetch me a mozo,” Catalina interrupted her. “Take the remaining pesos and fetch me a groom. La Reina is going to her castle.” She wasn’t offering more explanation than that. She didn’t owe anyone an explanation. She’d done what was right.

As her maid turned to comply, heading toward the livery, a loud pffffht rent the air. Catalina stared at her new acquisition in surprise.

Selena froze and swung around to admonish her charge. “Señorita! Your behavior has been questionable enough this day. Mind yourself.” She shook her head and her finger both before turning back to the task at hand.

Catalina heard her muttering as she sashayed away. She was too surprised and too tired to defend herself, but the breeze picked up, and a waft of foul air assaulted her. Catalina immediately tugged a delicate, lace handkerchief from her sleeve and placed it over her nose as she glared at the horse.

La Reina snorted and pawed the ground. Catalina could swear the mare was laughing at her. She merely shook her head. “Dios mío, and you let me take the blame for that?”

Pffffhht. Pfffht.


La Reina whinnied and bared her teeth as though she were smiling.

What’s Your Line?

A huge thank you to Krista for giving me her blog for the day! I’m sure she’s cringing, so I’ll start right in.

The opening line in a book can really draw the reader in. Some would say it’s a make-it or break-it moment. I looked to see what the opening lines were in my favorite books. Some were action, a few were dialogue. All of them were unique.

I thought today I would post the opening lines from Portals of Oz, my mythic romance that releases on July 13^th.

Abelia walked close to the shop walls as she peered into windows and gazed at the street traffic. Humans lived a much different life than Wood Nymphs in the Boronda Forest. Everyone here was in such a hurry.

 

Curiosity brought Abelia to town. Patience, the Remedy Maker’s wife, had stuffed her head with the exciting goings-on in the small town of Willow Bay.

She jumped when an old truck blared its horn at a car that waited too long at a green light. Dogs barked while chasing laughing children in the park across the street. Above it all, the delicious aroma of fried foods beckoned with tantalizing promises of a delicious meal.

 

In the corner of the park, under the shade of an enormous sweetgum tree, a plant peddler set up shop with a folding table, and displays of bonsai trees in small decorative pots. Abelia longed to leave the security of the shop walls and venture across the street. But then she would be out in the open, vulnerable.

Alone.

Portals of Oz is one of my books that revolve around mythic inhabitants in the modern day Boronda Forest. Here's a little blurb that best describes the story:

Abelia, a Boronda Forest Wood Nymph, came to Willow Bay to satisfy her curiosity of human life, and got more than she bargained for.

Over the course of the next week, Amelia has to accept the truth and learn who can be trusted. At midnight on her 23rd birthday, a contract between The Coalition and The Insurance Agency will expire, giving Marius full rein to approach his granddaughter and finish the project he started with her so many years ago.

Dear “Diary” for lack of a better word,

I feel like a ridiculous schoolgirl. I’m sitting here with a blank page and a pen, wondering what to write. Hector Rodriguez, IA physician, gave me this assignment before he left for Clearwater. One of the stupid requirements to avoid anger management courses is to write about my feelings. This whole exercise is a pile of shit.  Right now, I think the classes would be easier.

Hector, you want me to talk about my feelings? I don’t let anyone into my life and a piece of paper isn’t going to change that. You already know why. I’m a fucking open book. Do you want to hear that everything is sunshine and roses and I’m smiling? Sure, I’ll say it, but it’ll be a lie. Continuously, I hear Levi’s adage, “Sacrifice Few to Save Many” and it makes me sick. You have no fucking idea what I deal with every day of my life and now she’s here, which makes it ten times worse. Amelia Hamilton. Even her name pisses me off. She keeps trying to get closer to me and I can’t fucking stand it. She’s useless and her presence is a waste of time. Why can’t Max see that? Maybe I can find a way to get transferred. It doesn’t matter where as long as it’s far from Washington.

Damn, I need a drink, but I can’t slip back into that habit. I won’t do that again. Why am I even writing about my past?

Fuck this. Punching something will make me feel better. I’m out of here.

Something felt wrong.

In the living room, an ottoman rested on its side and a magazine lay open on the floor. A colorful article advertising Las Vegas blared from the pages. From the corner of my eye, the screen of Connor’s cell phone caught my attention. I watched it periodically blink, communicating new messages awaited.

I went to the kitchen next and found the latest stack of mail on the island. The top envelope made me cringe when I saw the return address. It was another letter from the State of Washington. This one was addressed to Amelia Brooks.

My identity had been an issue for years. Since age 18, I submitted multiple requests to change my last name from my grandfather’s back to my parents. With each attempt, the paperwork came back denied, stating my name was Amelia Benedict or another obscure surname starting with the letter “B”. Double-checking each field, I clearly filled out the forms to read Amelia Hamilton, but was contradicted every time. I determined it a sick way for my grandfather to haunt me from the grave. The latest correspondence would have to wait.

A broken wine bottle and bandage wrappers were on the counter next to the refrigerator. Droplets of dark fluid created a path from the bottle to the sink, making me shudder. The room began to feel too warm and nausea flooded my stomach. I grabbed a rolling pin from the island, gripping it so tightly my knuckles hurt.

 “Calm down, Amelia,” I said. “There’s a logical explanation and no one is going to hurt you.” I forced my mind away from childhood memories of a basement.

Swallowing hard, I tiptoed across the living room to the bedroom. As usual, the door was cracked open. I held the pin over my head, ready to attack in an instant. From where I stood, I couldn’t see more than the corner of the dresser and a beam of soft light. I took a deep breath and pushed the door open. A flashlight rested on the nightstand, pointed toward the ceiling. As I scanned the room, my jaw dropped and my heart paused.

 “Connor?” I dropped the makeshift weapon at my feet.

Hi, I’m Tamaria Soana. First, I would like to thank Krista Ames for having me here today! 

Who is Tamaria you might be wondering? I’m a forty year old stay-at-home of two young girls. I’ve always loved to read, especially on a cold Buffalo night. My first book Obsession published this past March and my feet still haven’t touched the ground. Besides writing, I co-own Shades of Rose Marketing and Shades of Rose YA Marketing. I also host a talk show on Talkshoe called Live with Tamaria ~ Giving authors a voice.

I’m here today to talk about my newest short story, Tropical Cougar. It’s just over 3,000 words of sexy fun! I’ve been wanting to write a cougar type story for a while now. The older woman, younger man pairing to me is highly erotic.

When mulling over the aspect of my story and developing it, I knew I wanted the following things. A tropical location, my heroine to be strong, and my hero to a bit lost in life.

Seth let out a laugh.  “I don’t care.  I just need a taste.  I’ll make it quick; just trust me,” he said as he hovered over her.  He looked into her blue eyes and smiled when she nodded, giving him all the incentive he needed.  He leaned down and kissed her lips before traveling down her body.  He took each nipple in his mouth and sucked hard before he pushed her legs apart, and his tongue found heaven “Mmmm, you taste so sweet.”  He moaned into her warm flesh.

Thanks so much for being with us today...can you tell us a little about yourself? 

My name is Ella Jade and I've been writing for as long as I can remember. The dialog and plots have always played out in my head, but I never knew what to do with them. That all changed when I discovered the eBooks industry.

I'm a SAHM to two active boys. When I'm not writing, I like to kick box, spend time with my family and spin plots in my head.

What or who initially inspired you to become a writer?

The characters inspire me. They speak pretty loud inside my head and motivate me to tell their story. I love to tell a story. There are so many characters and relationships to explore.

What kind of research do you do for a novel and how extensive do you get?

Most of my ideas come from my imagination. I've written a few BDSM stories, so I had to research some elements for those stories. Mostly I research locations and geography to get the perfect setting. I'm big with dialog, so I just run the conversations in my head to make sure they sound right.

Do you have a special place you like to do your writing? Such as an office, a spare room, the dining room table, your couch?

I'm all over the place. During the day, I hang out in the dining room. I've turned that into my office. At night, I can be found in the guest room. I slip under the covers and create. The house is quiet and I can focus.

As a reader, what types of works do you like to read and do you think they influence the genre/genres you write in?

I've always been a big Nora Roberts fan. Yes. I'd definitely say reading her stories influenced the genre I write in. I love a strong romance. My favorite thing to explore is relationships. I love finding new ways to bring couples together.

What is your favorite method of writing...as in laptop, desktop, Ipad or the old fashioned pencil and paper??  And do you plot out your story or go with the flow of your muse?

My laptop takes a pretty good beating. I also use the netbook because its portable. I take it when I'm getting my hair dyed or when I'm sitting at my kids' practices.

I start out with a basic outline. It just tells me where I'd like to go, but once I sit down and start typing, I really let the characters take me where I need to go.

When you need a break or some time off from the trials of being a writer, what can you be found doing?

These days I rarely take a break. If I do, I can be found at the gym. When a story isn't doing what I want it to do, I walk away for a bit. I'll do laundry or take a hot shower. When I go back, I'm good to go.

Hi S.J., so glad you could visit with us today.  Could you tell us a little about yourself?

I live in Southwest Missouri with my super supportive husband and my three fun loving kids. I love to laugh and have a good time. I used to be shy, but thanks to my husband, I’m quite a chatterbox now. Being with someone for fourteen years tends to make your personalities rub off on each other. As much as I like to kick back and enjoy things, I also know there are times when I need to kick my butt into gear and get things done.

What or who initially inspired you to become a writer?

The urge to write started in high school. I started writing poetry. I loved doing it. Once my creative juices got to flowing there was no stopping me. Reading spawned the urge to try writing a book. An idea came to me and the rest just fell into place.

What kind of research do you do for a novel and how extensive do you get?

 I would love to get really extensive with my research, especially for The Descendant. I want to visit the city it’s based on. It would be so awesome to see it up close and personal, instead of the pictures I’ve gawked at for years. For now though, I have to limit my research to what I can find on the Internet or in books.

Do you have a special place you like to do your writing? Such as an office, a spare room, the dining room table, your couch?

It would be nice to have a little home office where I could sit down in front of the computer, turn on my music, and block out the other noises in order to devote my full attention to my writing. It’s a wonderful dream. Maybe one day it will come true, but for now I write wherever I can. I write at my full time job, with the boss’ permission, of course. I have also spent my writing time at the dining room table, my couch, my bed, my floor, and my car.

As a reader, what types of works do you like to read and do you think they influence the genre/genres you write in?

I love romances. Historical, contemporary, paranormal, you name it, I read it. I also like to read YA horror novels, like the Fear Street series by R.L. Stine. Adult horror is too scary for me. I end up with nightmares, which is not cool. These genres do influence my writing to a certain extent. I write urban fantasy so I try to blend the genres together. I can put a bit of romance into the story without have to write a full on steamy love scene. I can also put in just enough gore to make you cringe, but not puke.

What is your favorite method of writing...as in laptop, desktop, Ipad or the old fashioned pencil and paper??  And do you plot out your story or go with the flow of your muse?

When I first started writing, a little over ten years ago, I used a typewriter. Unfortunately for me, it broke, and with no extra money lying around to buy a computer, I used the good ole paper and pen method. My how the times have changed though, I can proudly announce that not only do I own one computer, but two. I also have two computers at my day job as well. Now if only there were two of me…the possibilities would be endless. To plot out my story I go back to the paper and pen, but once I get to typing the muse takes over. I usually have to go back and revise my outline.

When you need a break or some time off from the trials of being a writer, what can you be found doing?

There is quite an array of things I would like to do when I need a break from writing. Such as play with my kids, talk to my hubby, watch TV or a movie, listen to music, or read. What I actually end up doing is cleaning. I make it fun though. I put on my MP3 player, jam to my music that no one else in my family likes, sing along with it, and show off my terrible dance moves in the process. Yes, I am a nerd, and am proud to say as much.

Is there anything about yourself nobody knows that you would like to share with our readers??

I actually wanted to be an FBI agent when I was a junior in high school. I can’t remember what changed my mind, but I’m glad I didn’t follow through with it.

For fun, I have a few personal questions,

1) Favorite color – Purple, simply because my daughter thinks I look really pretty in the color.
2) Favorite dessert – Midnight Truffle Blizzard from Dairy Queen
3) Favorite Season – Autumn, because temperatures start to cool and the colors of the leaves are just down right gorgeous.
4) Favorite sad song- Falling by The Civil Wars
5) Favorite Romantic movie – Phantom of the Opera, it is the perfect combination of romance and music.
 

And a bonus, what is your ideal romantic vacation??

This is going to sound really sappy, but as long as my husband is with me, anywhere would be fine with me. We can have a good time together no matter if we are in Aruba (which we have been to), or sitting at home on the couch.

Welcome Melissa, it's great to have you here today.  Can you start off by telling us a little about yourself…

My life is like the Brady Bunch but without Alice.  We are a blended family with four children. Born and raised in a rural town in Ohio, everyone knew who I was growing up.  If I got a speeding ticket, you can be assured that my parents heard about it before I arrived home. Thinking to escape the horrors of small town living, I moved to Michigan and ended up in an even smaller town. We have only one light in town. 

I’ve worked as a blogger, book reviewer, teacher, and editor over the last twenty years.  Writing has always been a passion of mine and one that I’m glad that I can satisfy today.

What or who initially inspired you to become a writer?

My mom was my first inspiration.  When I was younger, she wrote a romance novel and tried to get it published.  There wasn’t such a thing as e-publishing or computers, and I remember her writing her story on the old typewriter in our family room. Her dedication and drive to get published was a part of the reason why I wanted to write.  It allows me to be close to her.

What kind of research do you do for a novel and how extensive do you get?

When I need to, I enjoy doing extensive research.  I take a look at every piece of information that I can find on the subject.  When I was working on my story, Forever Love, I researched Alzheimer’s.  I wanted my character to be realistic and it required me to really understand the disease.

Do you have a special place you like to do your writing? Such as an office, a spare room, the dining room table, your couch?

 I love to write at the kitchen table or kitchen island.  It allows me to be a part of the action, close to the food and drinks, and still be relaxed.  I have written my stories on my couch curled up with the dogs and a blanket or in bed as my husband sleeps next to me.  When the muse comes, I have to write.

As a reader, what types of works do you like to read and do you think they influence the genre/genres you write in?

My favorite genres to read are paranormal romance.  I love shape shifters, magic, and kick-butt characters.  However, I haven’t written in that genre yet.  Never say never! 

What is your favorite method of writing...as in laptop, desktop, Ipad or the old fashioned pencil and paper?? And do you plot out your story or go with the flow of your muse?

 I MUST have my computer.  It goes where I go, the doctor’s office, my honeymoon, or bed.  It is the only way that I write.  It gives me a safe way to write and save my ideas.  I don’t plot out my ideas, although I do write down plot bunnies when they come to me.  Otherwise I wouldn’t remember them.  But I do write with the flow of my muse.  Some days it flows like water from the faucet while other days it is a mere trickle.

When you need a break or some time off from the trials of being a writer, what can you be found doing?

When I need a break from writing, I can be found reading and reviewing books, or working as an editor.  I am always busy.  There isn’t a part of my life that isn’t centered around books.  They are my passion and my escape from the real world.

Is there anything about yourself nobody knows that you would like to share with our readers??

My two dogs are named after characters from some of my favorite TV shows, CSI and CSI:Miami.  They are like my little babies and I spoil them rotten!

5) Favorite Romantic movie - I love Phantom of the Opera and Mama Mia.  They show that love is more than just passion.

My ideal romantic vacation is anywhere that I can spend the time with my husband, great weather and enjoy some time away from the daily worries.  :)
