Author, author...

...read all about it!!

Today we have another great author with us.  Please help me welcome...

Amy Gregory

Amy, so glad you could be here today. Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Well, I married my high school sweetheart and we have three busy kids that I drive from one sport to the next, cheering them on at meets, games and races.  We spend a fair amount of time camping at race tracks.  In the meantime, I love to read when I can and write as much as humanly possible.

What did you want to be when you were growing up or did you always want to be a writer?
I have always been a creative type of person, and I’ve always know something was missing.

When did you first start writing?
Actually, I hadn’t written anything since high school.  About a year ago I had a recurring dream that wouldn’t leave me alone.  I started to write it down and the rest is history!

What is a typical writing day like for you?
Unlike most people, I have to have mostly silence when I write.  I tend to get up very early before the rest of my house wakes up!  I also carry a notebook with me at all times in case I’m away from my laptop and something comes to me such as a piece of dialogue or an idea for a scene.

Do you have an specific routine you follow or specific items you need with you when you write?
Well, I have to get a cup of coffee first!  I also get out my notebook I keep with details I’ve jotted down, such as character notes that I may need to refer to or any details that I’ve written down when away from my computer.  Then I just pick up where I left off the day before.

What is your favorite part of writing?  Is there anything you don’t like about being a writer?
I love creating a story that I want to read.  I love falling in love with my characters.  I love all parts of the actual writing, but who knew that was the easy part!  After the writing comes the hard part, the getting published and promoting your books.  But it’s all a part of the process and I wouldn’t trade this for any other job on the planet!

What is your favorite length of book to write?  (Short story, novella, full length novel) Why?
I prefer to write novel length books.  You can develop your characters more, get into their backstory, explain why they think the way they do or act a certain way.  Sometimes in shorter books, the reader has to assume some of that.  I also like that I don’t have to worry about how long or how detailed my scenes are because I’m having to worry about book length limits.  I just write.  The characters and their story are what determines the length.

How does your family feel about your writing and you being an author?
I think they’re pretty proud.  My husband is my biggest supporter.  The kids all argue on a regular basis about who the books are going to be dedicated to, but overall, I think it’s something unique.  Not everyone can say their mom is an author.

Is there a to-be-read waiting on your bedside table?

Only about 30 or so!  I love to read, but I’m sooo bad!  Once I start a book, I can’t put it down.  Then the kids are asking where dinner is!  But besides writing, reading is one of my favorite things to do.  I love to see how other authors use different techniques and pieces of dialogue.  You can see different regions of the world that way.  I have a different perspective when I read now, but I think I love it even more if that is possible!

For fun, I have a few personal questions,

Favorite 5
1)  Favorite Holiday – Christmas!
2) Favorite Drink – toss up, coffee & Mr. Pibb
3) Favorite Author – oh wow, I have soooo many!  Mari Carr
4) Favorite Book – Do Over – Mari Carr
5) Favorite Animal – sea turtles

And for a bonus:  What is a typical mood for you?  And is your mood different when you’re writing?

I’m pretty happy and jovial most of the time.  Actually my scenes do effect my mood.  When I’m writing and it’s upsetting, I’ll be typing with tears in my eyes.  If it’s funny then I’m laughing my butt off right along with them.  And so on… lol

Where can our readers find you??

Is there an upcoming or current release you would like to share with us today and where can we find it?

Racing to Love is the series title.
Carter’s Treasure is out now on Amazon and Barnes & Nobel.
Book two is Jesse’s Soul, it will be out January 3, 2013.
Eli’s Honor and Alex’s Destiny will follow in 2013.

Excerpt:
They continued to walk back toward the pits, but he stopped when they were in the darkened hallway, just before they would have rounded the corner and been seen.
Molly’s heart sped.

He was still holding her hand, but turned to face her as he placed his other hand on her waist. She sucked in a breath when he stepped forward. Her first instinct was to be anxious, to cower back, but something in those ice blue eyes told her she didn’t have to be afraid.
When he had leaned in to kiss her when they were sitting on the track, she’d panicked. And then when he had started to move away, she’d panicked again—for a different reason entirely.

Those flip-flopping emotions were about to drive her crazy.

Now, in the dimmed corridor, Molly closed her eyes to catch her breath and to search for a decision. He’d been rubbing his thumb on her waist, but his movements stopped when her eyes dropped closed. The soothing strokes didn’t continue until she finally reopened her eyes and dragged her attention up his chest and past his Adam’s apple. She continued up until she locked her gaze with his. When she offered him a hesitant smile, he began stroking her again with a warm smile on his lips.

Staring down at her, he let go of her hand and skimmed the back of his over her cheek. She felt her heart thundering, her pulse racing when she ran her hands up his chest, feeling each and every rippled muscle. She’d never purposely touched a man like this before. Sure, she’d felt Brody’s muscles when she’d smacked him for one reason or another. Or when trying to push him off of her after he’d wrestled her to the ground being an ornery brother and all. But this? This was foreign.

Her eyes were back on her own fingers, taking everything in. She stopped at his heart and could feel it pounding hard beneath the soft cotton t-shirt.

“Just so you know…” he started in his slow, sexy voice.

She could tell he was waiting for eye contact again before continuing. “Yeah?” she whispered.

“I’m going to fall in love with you.”

Reviews:

www.forgetthehouseworkimreading.blogspot.com ... The characters are amazing.  I gave this book 5 Baskets!

www.onceuponaseries.blogspot.com ...  Carter's Treasure is a fantastic start to a new series - full of loveable characters, a sweet but oh-so-sexy romance and heart-stopping suspense.  I am glad to have found this new author and I can't wait to read the next book in the series, Jesse's Soul, which is due for release in january 2013 (although can I just say at this point that I REALLY don't want to have to wait that long :P)

Before we let you go today is there a favorite recipe you'd like to share?  I like to cook and am always looking for new recipes to try and share but it's totally up to you.

I am a HUGE fan of Ree Drummond AKA The Pioneer Woman!!!  All of her recipes are amazing, but this simple one for biscuits is truly worth the ten minutes it takes to make them – yes only about ten minutes!!

4 cups all purpose flour
1 ½ tsp salt
2 ½ tsp baking soda
1 ½ tsp baking powder
1/3 cup shortening
1/3 cup cold butter
1 ¼ buttermilk

450 degree oven…..
In large bowl combine all dry ingredients.  Add shortening and cold butter pieces and with pastry blender cut in the shortening and butter until the mixture crumbles into coarse crumbs.
Pour in the buttermilk, and mix gently with fork until combined.  Dough will be sticky, not overly dry or crumbly.
Lightly flour clean surface and roll out dough – ½ - ¾ inch thick depending on how thick you like your biscuits.  Cut with a round cutter and bake on cookie sheet.
11-14 minutes, watch until tops are golden brown.
I promise this takes no time at all and they are so delicious!!!

They sound delicous!  Amy thanks so much for sharing this recipe with us and everything about your writing career.  It was wondering having you here and please come back again soon.

Readers, make sure you get your own copy of Carter's Treasure.  This is sure to be a great series!

Until next time, Happy reading...

About our Author:: Jan Scarbrough

I've dreamed of being a writer since I reported on freelance writing for a career project in the ninth grade. After majoring in English at Western Kentucky University, I taught high school English for five years. Since 1982 I've made my living as a writer — a technical writer — but I didn't have the nerve to make my dream come true until after a life-threatening illness in 1988. I've enjoyed my process of becoming a published author. A member of the Romance Writers of America, I've been active in my local Kentucky RWA chapter and am a member of Novelist, Inc. My best friends are fellow writers. Who else will check a point plot for me or understand GMC and POV? I live in Louisville, Kentucky, along with two dogs and four cats. I enjoy taking riding lessons on the American Saddlebred Horse. I'm a member of the American Saddlebred Horse Association . Author, author...

...read all about it!!

Please help me welcome to the blog today....

Ute Carbone

So great to have you hear Ute !!  Would you mind telling us a little about yourself?

Thanks for having me at your blog Krista. A little about me? Hmm.. I live in New Hampshire not too far from the Massachusetts border. I’ve been married to the same great guy for over thirty years and we have two grown sons. I like the outdoors, chocolate, red wine and theater. And I love to read.

What did you want to be when you were growing up or did you always want to be a writer?

No, actually. My handwriting was and still borders on atrocious, I can’t spell to save my life and I mix up all the easy stuff like your and you’re and its and it’s even though I know the difference.

As a kid, I wanted to be all kinds of things, from zoologist to actress to book store owner and that only taps the surface! I didn’t start writing seriously until my kids were school aged. It’s kind of the perfect job, because I get to live all those other occupations and more vicariously.

When did you first start writing?

Although I didn’t get serious about it until much later, I used to write songs and poems  in high school and college. When my kids were small, I joined a local poetry group. To my huge surprise, they liked my poetry.  Later, I went to a writing workshop and discovered that I loved writing stories. I started with short stories and finally challenged myself to write a novel. And I’ve never looked back!

What is a typical writing day like for you?

A good writing day has me working late morning until just after lunch. I start with blog posts, interviews and any edits that I need to get done and then move on to my work in progress and try to add a few words. I’m a bit on the slow side, a thousand words a day is good for me. But I am steady too, so those words do add up.

I usually write my first drafts long hand, and most often I’ll do this late at night before bed—ten to midnight on a good day.

Do you have an specific routine you follow or specific items you need with you when you write?

I need my coffee!! And I usually do start off with e-mail and facebook and twitter (I’ve heard it called the Bermuda Triangle. Very apt!) I sometimes will listen to music if things are noisy around and about my office. And I start with pen and paper. I write all my drafts out longhand before putting them into the computer. I revise while typing. Then, after I’m done with a project, I reread and mark any scene I’m not happy with. And I start all over again: pen and paper, rewrite into the computer. I do this as often as I think necessary.

What is your favorite part of writing?  Is there anything you don’t like about being a writer?

I love writing first drafts, especially early in a project when the possibilities are endless. Lately, I’ve come to like rewrite and editing. A good editor can really push you to make the work better. I like when I can see how to make it better and am able to do just that. I don’t particularly like promotion. It takes up a good deal of time and I’d rather be writing!

What is your favorite length of book to write?  (Short story, novella, full length novel) Why?

Hard to chose! I guess I’d have to say I like novels best, because they give you the space to create a whole world and get deeply involved in that world. Last year, I wrote my first novella, a time-travel romance called “The Whisper of Time” which will be out later this year. I’d never written time-travel before. Currently, I’m working on a historical romance novella. Historical is also new for me. I like that novellas and short stories allow me to try new things without making the kind of time commitment that a novel demands.

How does your family feel about your writing and you being an author?

They’re very supportive.

Is there a to-be-read waiting on your bedside table?

Oh yes! It’s so tall that if it topples, I’ll be buried alive! I’m forever buying books. And know I have a Kindle. Amazon is a great enabler for my addiction. One click. Just one click. So now I have a long cue on my reader as well.

For fun, I have a few personal questions,

Favorite 5

1) Favorite Holiday - Tossup between the fourth of July and Valentine’s Day.
2) Favorite Drink - Red Wine. And coffee. I drink lots of coffee.
3) Favorite Author - Tough choice; Elizabeth Berg this week. Next week it might be someone else.
4) Favorite Book-  Another tough choice. My all time favorite is probably Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird”.
5) Favorite Animal - Gorillas.

And for a bonus:  What is a typical mood for you?  And is your mood different when you’re writing?

I’m generally sunny with occasional cloudiness. I’m in a better mood when the writing is going well.

One last thing before we let you leave us today, do you have a favorite recipe you'd like to share?  I like to cook and am always looking for new recipes to try and share but it's totally up to you.

I love sharing recipes!

Here’s a dish that Beanie, the main character in my debut novel Blueberry Truth, makes for husband Mac.

It’s terrific for summer barbeque:

Beanie’s Grilled Chicken in Ginger Sauce

Ingredients:
1 1/2 pounds of boneless chicken thighs
Marinade:
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
1/4 cup soy sauce
2 Tb sesame oil
2 Tb fresh grated gingerroot

2 tsp minced garlic
2 scallions, finely chopped
2 tsp brown sugar
1 tsp crushed red pepper

Preparation:
1. Rinse chicken thighs under cold running water. Pat dry.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together vinegar, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Whisk in rest of marinade ingredients. Remove 1/4 cup of marinade as basting sauce.
3. Marinate chicken in sauce for 4 hours in refrigerator.
4. Prepare grill
5. Grill chicken for 10-15 minutes until done, turning frequently. Baste with reserved sauce while cooking. Serve hot.

Author, author...

...read all about it!!!

Thanks for joining us as we have
 Tinnekke Bebout
with us today.

Tinnekke could you please tell us a little about yourself...

Gee, where to start? I’m a Hoosier by birth; I’ve lived all over the country but returned to my home state to be near family about 20 years ago. I’ve lived in the greater Chicago area for the last seven years. I’ve been married nearly 17 years and have a wonderful son who is getting ready to start middle school next year. We are collectively owned by three cats, all of whom we adopted from pet rescues. No-kill shelters and rescue of animals is a passionate cause of mine. I feel there is a special place in the after-life of pain and misery for those who harm or abandon their pets. I’m also an avid gardener, since my day job is pediatric nursing, it relaxes and grounds me as well as being a source of beauty and nourishment.

What or who initially inspired you to become a writer?
That’s hard to say. I can remember creating my own stories as early as third grade. I got into Dungeons and Dragons and created whole worlds with maps and backstories when I was still in elementary school. It’s just something that has always been part of me. Doing it professionally actually didn’t enter my mind until 2007, when I started publishing essays on various philosophical subjects on some email lists to which I belonged. I received a great deal of encouragement from the women with whom I shared my writings. My first book, The Dance of the Mystai, was born from these essays back in 2009.

What kind of research do you do for a novel and how extensive do you get?

I haven’t completed a novel as of yet. I have been doing short stories so far, though ‘Blossoms for the May Queen’, which is in the Ishtar Press anthology Taboo, approaches novella length. That one I could easily have kept on going with and made it into a novel. I read extensively about the locations in which I set my stories, and make sure to add authentic local color. The characters go places that my readers could actually go and see things that are really there. So far, all my stories have been set in the present day, but I am working on a piece set during Bronze Age Greece. That one is taking more time since I am researching not just the area and its customs, but as much as I can about the language, the stories, and the history of Greece as well. I am also familiarizing myself with the geography of the period and the architecture.

Do you have a special place you like to do your writing? Such as an office, a spare room, the dining room table, your couch?

I write everywhere. I keep notebooks with me just about anywhere I go, so I can jot down ideas or write what’s bouncing around in my head. When it comes time to put it all together, I retreat to the den, where my computer is. It is quiet and private, something I need when I’m in my zone.

As a reader, what types of works do you like to read and do you think they influence the genre/genres you write in?

I read almost anything. However, I am partial to science-fiction/fantasy. I also am a fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Jane Austen. I also adore artistically written erotica and epic poetry. Everything influences my writing to some extent. The inspiration for the novel I am writing came from a book about the historical world of the Trojan War, written as a scholarly piece.

What is your favorite method of writing...as in laptop, desktop, Ipad or the old fashioned pencil and paper??  And do you plot out your story or go with the flow of your muse?

I usually start out writing with pen and paper, since I can carry that anywhere. If I am writing for an anthology that has a set theme, I will plan that into my rough idea, but I tend to go where the characters and my own Muse take me.

When you need a break or some time off from the trials of being a writer, what can you be found doing?

My usual non-writing activities are puttering in my garden, being a cat bed, playing with my son, going out with my husband, and swimming in our deliciously wonderful pool. If I am having a bad case of writer’s block or just need a break from sitting at my desk all day, I can usually be found in my back yard, weather permitting. I can also be found in my kitchen making bread. I also love playing various computer games as a form of relaxation.

Is there anything about yourself nobody knows that you would like to share with our readers??

Nah. I’m a very reserved person by nature. If most people don’t know something about me, it’s because I prefer it that way.

For fun, I have a few personal questions,

Your Favorite 5
1) Favorite color - purple
2) Favorite dessert – tossup between strawberry shortcake and brownies
3) Favorite Season - spring
4) Favorite sad song- Moonlight and Vodka by Chris deBurgh
5) Favorite Romantic movie – Benny and Joon

And a bonus, what is your ideal romantic vacation??  A sailboat, a broad swath of blue water, and my husband – with loads of time to be alone.

Is there an upcoming or current release  you would like to share with us today and where can we find it?

Yes, actually. The Ishtar Press anthology Taboo is coming out very soon! It is available for pre-order through http://paganwriterspress.com/catalog/ right now.

These are stories of lust. Not a timid, discrete lust, but one that reaches to the heavens and feeds the divine within us.

A sacrifice to Pan, a Beltaine celebration in a poly family, a BDSM scene where Tarot leads the way, an exotic dancer offering her performance to Ishtar, and a sensual exploration by the Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone, this first Taboo anthology is a testament to naughty and kinky imaginations.

Step in, leave your preconceptions at the door, and enjoy the ride!” – blurb for Taboo

As far as I know, it will be available on Amazon and other sites once it has been released. You can learn more about Ishtar Press on their Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ishtar-Press/181993641891247

Marianne rose and smiled, stretching like a cat and letting her auburn hair brush her back silkily. “Let me make you some of what we’re having, or you can have my plate and I’ll cook some more for me.” Offering Angela her place at the table, she went to the stove and relit the burner. Another breakfast was easily made, the coffee warmed with fresh, and then the foursome lingered over warm drink and conversation, which inevitably turned to the subject of Beltane.

“I still cannot believe we’re going to participate in two Beltanes in one weekend,” Rhys smiled, “I feel like a kid knowing he has a free pass to the candy store.”

Marianne tickled his ribs lightly, “Well, we could always skip the community one, if two is too many for you.” She winked at him impishly.

“Oh goodness, no, we can’t skip any of them!” was the quick rejoinder from Rhys. He patted Angela on the shoulder playfully and murmured, “After all, can’t have Angela miss out on anything, since this is her first chance to celebrate Beltane. We simply must show her a good time.”

Angela quickly blushed crimson, which caused raucous amusement as Jim noted the way being embarrassed crinkled her nipples. Marianne decided this was a good opportunity to beat a retreat to the shower and left the men commenting on the ways they could show Angela a good time.” – Blossoms for the May Queen excerpt from Taboo

You can find other anthologies to which I have contributed on my Amazon.com page. http://www.amazon.com/-/e/B007YUO6GS

If you want to check out The Dance of the Mystai, I self-published the first edition myself, and it can be found here:  http://www.cafepress.com/mystaiofthemoon.375978026

I will be starting work on the second edition this summer, and hope to have it out next year.

One last thing before we let you go, do you have a favorite recipe you'd like to share?  I like to cook and am always looking for new recipes to try and share but it's totally up to you.

I have tons of recipes. One thing I have been doing for myself is creating a cookbook of my recipes. Here’s one of our favorites.

Classic Cheese Fondue

This is a tasty dish that can make any day special. It does take some patience and a careful hand, so don’t make it when you’re stressed out or just plain tired. It doesn’t take long, other than shredding the cheese, but that can be done ahead of time with the cheeses stored, already mixed with corn starch, in a zipper bag in the fridge, so it’s ready when you are. This dish is best made when you have someone in the kitchen that is able and willing to help, since it really does require constant, careful stirring at some points. It’s a fun family project that really is a meal unto itself.

1 cup Chenin Blanc or other dry white wine
Juice of ½ lemon
½ tsp garlic powder
½ pound Emmenthaler cheese, shredded
½ pound Gruyere cheese, shredded
2 tbsp corn starch
Fresh ground pepper
Generous splash of mead
½ tsp dry mustard
Freshly grated nutmeg

After shredding the cheese (if you can find those pre-shredded let me know!), put it in a gallon zipper bag, add cornstarch and then shake to coat the cheese and put to one side.

Over medium heat in a heavy medium sauce pan, add the lemon juice and wine and garlic powder and let it come to a simmer. Reduce heat to medium-low, and add the cheeses in small handfuls, stirring constantly in a zigzag to make sure your spoon gets the center as well as the edges of the pot. Be very patient and stir in each handful and let it begin to melt before you add the next one.

While you are doing this, have someone else start pre-warming the fondue pot. Once all the cheese has been incorporated, have someone else grind in some fresh pepper while you keep stirring. Cook just until the cheese is at that creamy smooth stage but not stringy. Remove from heat and add the mead and stir until incorporated, then add the mustard powder and nutmeg and stir gently.  Transfer into the warmed fondue pot carefully and place over heat source.  Serve with such munchies as chunks of apple, cubes of fresh baguette, breadsticks, whole fresh mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, and other fresh veggies and firm fruits – even ham chunks can be a hearty and tasty dipper for this fondue.

Tinnekke, thank you so much for being with us today. It was great to learn all about you and that recipe sounds delicous.  Would love to see that cookbook you are putting together :)

Readers, make sure you keep an eye out for the release of Taboo, you won't want to miss it!!

Happy reading,

Krista
